"He's a woman. She's a man". Stephan is a 46-year-old man, who cross-dresses under the name of Juwelia since he was 24. Monday to Friday he is a painter, but on Saturdays he turns into Juwelia, a transvestite performing a kitsch, glamorous show in his gallery in Kreuzberg, Berlin. He paints his paintings the same way he puts on his make up: "I'm just like one of my works, I have always got to find out the right composition before I go out!". When I started this project I wanted to depict the difference between being a man and being a woman, as everybody of us brings both sides inside himself. But I soon discovered it was more interesting to see how this two components can cope together, instead of analyzing them separately. The union that Juwelia embodies is an explosion of unidentified elements, so hidden and peculiar that you could loose yourself into. Why hide ourselves behind definitions, when we can embrace more nuances of expression?
